Animal Control

Cheshire's Animal Control Officers serve under the jurisdiction of the Police Department. The Officers have a wide range of responsibilities involving both domestic and wild animal calls for service. Some of the duties carried out by these officers include:

  • Work to prevent the spread of rabies
  • Investigate complaints of potentially rabid animals
  • Enforce vaccination requirements for domestic animals
  • Investigate animal bite complaints
  • Impound and return or replace stray dogs
  • Enforce the dog licensing requirements
  • Examine and obtain care for injured or mistreated animals
  • Dispose of sick or dangerous animals
  • Issue summons

The Officers are assisted by a group of civilian volunteers who help care for and place animals with adoptive families. The Animal Control facility is fully equipped to board and care for up to 18 dogs.

If you would like to adopt a dog, please download and complete our Dog Adoption Application and return it by mail to the address on the bottom of the form.  You can download the form and either electronically fill it or complete it by hand.
